Syracuse Urban Inclusive Teacher Residents (SUITRs) will spend 8.5 months in an urban teacher residency linking theory into their daily practice, augmented by the real time mentoring of a team of special educators and content teachers. This clinically rich teacher preparation program aims to better prepare candidates to meet the critical teacher shortage in secondary (7-12) special education, and maximize their retention as effective teachers in high needs schools. MATH- UP (Mathematics Achievement with Teachers of High need Urban Population) targets college seniors studying in any major area, with interest and competency in mathematics who have a desire to teach at the elementary school level. O-RITE seeks specifically to prepare teachers for initial dual certification in teacher shortage areas, specifically Special Education along with Math or Science (7-12), or TESOL (all grades). O-RITE has partnered with nine high-need schools in Oswego, Syracuse, and New York City to offer degree candidates intensive field-based experiences. While completing this field-based MAT program, candidates are admitted as a cohort to promote the establishment of a strong professional learning community. SUNY Oswego's Clinically Rich Pilot in action!

The O-RITE (Oswego Residency Initiative for Teacher Excellence) Project introduces a new Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program, which integrates coursework with intensive school residency experiences in order to prepare teachers to work in high need schools in the areas of secondary SPED, the sciences, mathematics, and TESOL.

American Museum of Natural History

NEW YORK — Growing up on Long Island, Katie Warner used to visit New York City's American Museum of Natural History and remembers being frightened of the 94-foot-long blue whale model that's suspended from the ceiling in the Hall of Ocean Life.

New York University

When residents of New York University’s (NYU) Clinically Rich Integrated Science Program (CRISP) start their residency year, they “spend three weeks in July at a middle school in Brooklyn, where they work with mentor teachers to implement a science unit of study with volunteer students, and then [work] four days a week from September through June in one of three host middle or high schools on Manhattan’s Lower East Side,” says CRISP Program Director Pamela Fraser-Abder, associate professor of science education. “Residents work closely with their classroom teacher/mentor and school’s senior leadership and science faculty, and receive intensive weekly coaching by NYU faculty, the CRISP Residency Coach, and NYU’s Urban Master Teacher in Science.” READ MORE


SUNY Albany

For SUNY student Andrianna Walraven, the last year of her graduate program has been unlike anything she could have imagined.

Walraven has spent the last year as a resident fellow at Amsterdam High School, as part of the Graduate Level Clinically Rich Teacher Preparation Pilot Program, a program aimed at effectively preparing teachers for high needs schools and increasing the retention of the teachers in order to impact student achievement and growth.

When she graduates in August, she will graduate with her Master's degree in Special Education, with certificates in teaching Students with Disabilities in grades 1 through 6, Students with Disabilities Adolescent General grades 7 through 12, Literacy grades 1 through 6, and Childhood Education 1 through 6.
