April 28, 2006

To: All Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision (BPSS)-Regulated Schools with Nurse Aide/Nurse Assistant Programs.

In January 2006, the Department of Health released its new Nurse Aide Training Program (NATP) curriculum to be used for training nurse aides in Residential Health Care Facilities (RHCFs). All nurse aides testing after July 1, 2006, whether trained in RHCFs regulated by the Department of Health or proprietary schools regulated by BPSS, will be tested according to material covered in the new curriculum.

This notice, sent to BPSS supervised schools with approved nurse aide training programs by email, formally notifies those schools that they must submit a revised Nurse Aide curriculum, by May 30, 2006. To obtain the BPSS-approved nurse aide curriculum electronically in Microsoft Word format, send an email to treimer2@mail.nysed.gov.   A hard copy of the revised nurse aide curriculum can be obtained by requesting such from the above email address or by sending that request to Dr. Reimer at the address above or by facsimile at (518) 473-3644.  Hard copies will be mailed to those requesting them, not faxed.

Schools in the middle of current approval periods should indicate that the submission is an amendment in the appropriate box on the cover page of the Curriculum Application. Page 32 of the BPSS Nurse Aide Program has a sample item 18. For items 21a and 21b, applicants should simply write, “We will use the 2006 BPSS Nurse Aide Program.” For item 19 (equipment), schools must make sure to have the correct equipment. Processing these applications will be a priority.

 Sincerely,
