Faculty Development Project
In 2012, the Department signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) agreements with the State University of New York (SUNY) and the City University of New York (CUNY), and signed a contract with the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu), to assist New York’s public higher education institutions with assimilating the new information on teaching and learning into their programs. They are intended to help ensure that the deans, department chairs, faculty and staff, and their respective colleagues in the College of Arts and Sciences have the support and guidance needed to ensure that their teacher and school building leader preparation programs incorporate information about:
- the common core learning standards ,
- the new certification examinations,
- teacher and principal performance evaluations,
- data-driven instruction, and
- clinically-rich teacher and leader preparation.

Commission of Independent Colleges and Universities
The Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities has just signed a contract with the New York State Education Department to support and enhance faculty professional development activities.
The Independent sector includes more than 70 institutions that have teacher education or school leadership programs at the associate, baccalaureate and graduate levels, the largest concentration of programs in the state. In order to prepare for the implementation of the new teachers and school building leader certification requirements and the common core curricula, Commission of Independent Colleges and Universities has committed to support and enhance professional development activities for its teacher and school building leaders education program and relevant arts and sciences faculty, including deans, department chairs, teaching and research members. The goal of this initiative is to ensure that they have the support and guidance needed to successfully incorporate the new teacher and school building leader requirements in their respective degree programs, and if necessary, to make meaningful and relevant design changes in their courses to align with New York’s reforms.
We welcome Commission of Independent Colleges and Universities, and we look forward to this new partnership between the New York State Education Department and New York’s institutions of higher education.
